    How to Play Minesweeper

To play, use the left mouse button to open squares and the right mouse button to place flags on mines. Pressing the right mouse button again will change your flag into a question mark. If you open a square that does not touch any mines, it will be empty, and the adjacent squares will automatically open in all directions until reaching squares with numbers.

When a number touches the same number of squares, those squares must be mines. Look at these examples:

A simple trick is to press both buttons (“chord”) on a number to depress (but not open) the squares it touches. This shows you how many squares are touching the number.

    Basic Strategies

A common strategy for starting a game is to click randomly until you uncover a large area with many numbers. When all the mines touching a numbered square are flagged, you can use chording—pressing both mouse buttons simultaneously on the number—to open all remaining adjacent squares. This can save time and effort! However, be careful: if you place the right number of flags on the wrong squares, chording will cause a mine to explode.

    Difficulty Levels

    • Beginner: 8×8 or 9×9 grid with 10 mines
    • Intermediate: 16×16 grid with 40 mines
    • Expert: 30×16 grid with 99 mines

The game ends successfully when all safe squares are opened. A counter displays the number of mines without flags, and a clock keeps track of your time in seconds. Minesweeper saves your best time for each difficulty level.

You can also create Custom games with grid sizes up to 30×24 and a minimum of 10 mines. The maximum number of mines is calculated as (x−1)(y−1)(x-1)(y-1)(x−1)(y−1).
